SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is one of the forms of SEM, Search Engine Marketing.
SEO is an Inter-networking concept that concerns making it easier to find a web page or a website in Search Engine results through use of effective optimization methods. These methods are ways of trying to ensure that when a user searches for a keyword in a search engine, if the keyword relates to the content found in the website then the site appears as high as possible in the results page displayed.
This dramatically increases the chances of the user's website being visited by surfers. When you consider how to optimize a website for Search Engines you have to look at two factors: on-page optimization and off-page optimization.
On-page optimization has to do with the contents of the web site itself. It is is concerned with the site address's words, site title, meta tags, keyword frequency (density), main topics, sub-topics, phrases that are used as links and words in bold or italics. Site organization and the link structure (how you link pages together to form the website) are other on-page factors that may affect your rankings on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). While it is vital to ensure you website's contents are as optimized as possible, you have to avoid crossing certain line past which the Search Engines consider your site spammy and may ban it.
To go hand in hand with this is off-page optimization. This combines factors that are not included in your page but that still affect your rankings. Generally, this is defined by how your site links in and out and the overall popularity of your page's links. Back links (links to your site from other sites) determine how popular your site is and directly influence your ranking. Your site's keywords should be used as anchors to the external sites and these sites should have relevance to the contents of your site. It is also a plus if you link to sites that have a high Search Engine rank. This will reflect in your site's ranking. If you provide a reciprocal link to the external site make sure it is ranked higher if not same as your site. Otherwise, you'd rather use a one-way link.
When it comes to optimization, this is what you should have in mind. Also, it is important to exercise moderation in your SEO methods so as to avoid getting banned or being categorized as spam by the search engines. These methods will enable you to climb up the rankings and put you in a position to receive good site traffic for your online business in a steady fashion.
Happy web developing!
